WHY VALEN

HOW VALEN WORKS

ROTATION STRENGTH TESTING

Valen Rehab and Performance measures internal and external rotation strength with VALD dynamometers when it answers a useful question. You will see your strength ratios improve and know exactly when your shoulder is ready.

PROGRESSIVE LOADING PROTOCOL

Rotator cuff rehab requires careful, progressive loading. Dr. Keagan Barrett starts where your tissue can handle and systematically builds capacity. No skipping steps, no premature return.

SCAPULAR REHAB

The rotator cuff cannot function properly without a stable scapula. Valen Rehab and Performance addresses scapular control and positioning as a core component of every shoulder rehab program.

MANUAL THERAPY

Hands-on joint mobilization, soft tissue work, and dry needling to reduce pain and restore mobility. Combined with strengthening for lasting results.

CONSERVATIVE OR POST-SURGICAL

Whether you are managing a tear conservatively or recovering from surgical repair, Valen Rehab and Performance uses evidence-based protocols for both paths.

SPORT-SPECIFIC RETURN

Valen Rehab and Performance prepares your shoulder for the specific demands of your sport: throwing, swimming, overhead pressing, or racquet sports.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can a rotator cuff tear heal without surgery?

Many rotator cuff injuries can be managed with rehab. Conservative treatment includes progressive strengthening, manual therapy, and activity modification. The decision between surgery and conservative management depends on tear size, activity level, age, and functional goals. Valen Rehab and Performance helps you understand your options and builds a plan based on your specific situation.

How long does rotator cuff rehab take?

Rehab timelines vary significantly. Conservative management of rotator cuff tendinopathy requires progressive rehab over several weeks. Post-surgical rotator cuff repair recovery takes months before return to sport, with strength recovery taking longer. The timeline depends on tear severity, repair type, and your sport demands. Valen Rehab and Performance uses objective strength testing to track your progress and determine readiness for each phase.

What are the signs of a rotator cuff injury?

Common signs include pain on the outside or top of the shoulder, pain that worsens with overhead movements or reaching behind your back, weakness when lifting your arm, pain at night, and a catching or clicking sensation with shoulder movement. In athletes, you may notice decreased throwing velocity, pain during the cocking or deceleration phase of throwing, or difficulty with overhead movements in your sport.

What is the difference between rotator cuff tendinopathy and a tear?

Rotator cuff tendinopathy is irritation of the tendon without a structural tear. It responds to progressive loading and strengthening. A rotator cuff tear is an actual disruption of the tendon fibers, which can be partial or full-thickness. Both can cause similar symptoms, but treatment approaches and timelines differ. Medical imaging is needed to differentiate between them.

Can I still play sports with a rotator cuff injury?

It depends on the severity and your sport. Many athletes with rotator cuff tendinopathy can continue to play with modifications while undergoing rehab. Athletes with partial tears may be able to compete with a targeted strengthening program. Full-thickness tears in overhead athletes typically require rest or surgery before return to sport. Valen Rehab and Performance helps you make informed decisions about activity modification based on your goals.
