A DATE ALONE
DOES NOT CLEAR YOUR KNEE.

An ACL injury changes more than one season. It creates decisions about surgery, training, timelines, confidence, and what the athlete must be able to do before returning to competition.

High-demand return commonly requires many months and often extends beyond nine months. The procedure, associated injuries, sport, response to rehab, and readiness measures all influence the path.

At Valen, Dr. Keagan Barrett works one-on-one with the athlete from the current stage of recovery through strength, power, movement, running, jumping, and sport exposure. Objective testing adds context to the decision. It does not reduce the decision to one number.

WHY VALEN

HOW VALEN WORKS

OBJECTIVE RETURN-TO-SPORT TESTING

VALD ForceDecks and dynamometry can measure strength, force, power, and asymmetry at useful checkpoints. Results are interpreted with symptoms, movement, training exposure, confidence, and sport demands.

FULL-HOUR 1-ON-1 SESSIONS

ACL rehab demands focused attention. Every session is a full hour with your physical therapist. No sharing time with other patients.

PROGRESSIVE LOADING PLAN

The plan progresses from the athlete's current capacity toward strength, power, running, jumping, change of direction, and sport practice. Progression reflects both tissue healing and demonstrated readiness.

SPORT-SPECIFIC PREPARATION

Late rehab prepares the athlete for the actual cutting, pivoting, landing, acceleration, and reactive demands of the position and sport.

PSYCHOLOGICAL READINESS

Confidence matters. Progressive exposure to sport-specific movement helps the athlete rebuild trust before returning to competition.

RETURN-TO-SPORT READINESS

No test can eliminate risk. A multidomain assessment can identify unresolved deficits and support a better-informed progression with the athlete and medical team.

THE PROCESS

WHAT WORKING TOGETHER LOOKS LIKE

01

BASELINE & PLAN

Dr. Keagan reviews the injury or surgical history and assesses symptoms, motion, swelling, gait, strength, and current function. The first plan reflects the athlete's present stage rather than a generic calendar.

02

BUILD STRENGTH & POWER

Training progresses through appropriate strength, single-leg control, power, running, jumping, and change-of-direction work. Selected measures show what is improving and what still needs attention.

03

BUILD SPORT EXPOSURE

Testing and progressive practice exposure help guide the final stages. Return decisions consider healing time, symptoms, strength, power, movement, workload, confidence, and the athlete's sport. Surgical clearance remains with the medical team.

ATHLETE EXPERIENCES

WHAT ATHLETES SAY

"I tore my ACL and meniscus during a rugby game last year. I initially went the 'generic' rehab route through my insurance at a facility where the PT was seeing multiple patients alongside myself at the same time. I finally saw Keagan and immediately knew I was in good hands. Not only does he give you the time and energy you deserve, he also uses objective data with advanced technology to make sure you're taking the right steps to progress."

SOPHIA OPATZ

"After tearing my ACL, I was really just looking for someone who could guide me through the entire recovery process so I could get back to playing rugby. Now, I honestly don't even think about my ACL anymore. I feel completely unaffected by the injury and, if anything, I'm a better athlete. I'd recommend this program to anyone recovering from an ACL tear."

ROBERT HUERTA

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long does ACL rehab take?

High-demand return to sport commonly requires many months and often extends beyond nine months. The procedure, associated injuries, sport, response to rehab, and readiness measures determine the progression. Time matters, but time alone does not establish readiness.

What does ACL rehab look like at Valen?

ACL rehab is delivered one-on-one with Dr. Keagan Barrett. Early priorities may include symptoms, swelling, motion, gait, and quadriceps function. Later work develops strength, power, running, jumping, change of direction, and sport exposure. VALD ForceDecks and dynamometry are used at selected checkpoints when those measures can answer a useful question.

When can I return to sports after ACL surgery?

Return-to-sport decisions combine adequate healing time with symptoms, strength, power, movement quality, training exposure, confidence, and the demands of the athlete's sport. Ninety percent strength or hop symmetry is often used as a minimum benchmark, but it is not a complete clearance rule. Surgical clearance remains with the appropriate medical provider.

Can I avoid ACL surgery?

Some ACL injuries are managed without reconstruction, while others are treated surgically. The appropriate path depends on the athlete's knee, associated injuries, instability, sport, goals, and medical evaluation. Valen can assess current function and coordinate with the athlete's orthopedic team, but does not replace surgical decision-making.

What is the re-injury rate after ACL reconstruction?

Second-injury risk varies with age, activity level, sport, exposure, and the population studied. Objective testing can identify unresolved deficits and inform readiness decisions, but no single test battery can eliminate risk. The goal is to make the return decision with better information rather than a date alone.
